52 Coffees: Insights into Leadership Excellence with Workplace Synergistics

In the inaugural edition of our "52 Coffees" series, we had the privilege of interviewing Rusty Bozman , a remarkable leader and the visionary behind Workplace Synergistics.

Workplace Synergistics is a talent optimization consulting firm that offers a comprehensive range of services, from talent management to talent development. I was confident that he would provide valuable insights into his entrepreneurial journey, and he certainly exceeded expectations.


We grabbed a coffee at a local Panera Bread and dove right into our businesses and entrepreneurial experiences. Throughout our conversation, we bonded over our shared belief that faith and a positive mindset are fundamental to achieving entrepreneurial success. Here are the key takeaways from our interview: 

Q. What motivated you to become an entrepreneur?
A. Thirteen years ago, during the real estate market downturn and corporate downsizing, my days were consumed by leading layoffs for a large real estate company. However, my true passion has always been developing and inspiring people, something downsizing and layoffs could not feel further away from. So in 2011, fueled by this reality, I took the leap and founded Workplace Synergistics—a talent optimization consulting firm that fosters and cultivates professional development. Our approach centers around people, aiming to enhance both company performance and the well-being of its employees.

How did you come up with the idea for Workplace Synergistics?

A. I have always connected well with the people I work with. But what I realized was, a lot of younger people are desperate for mentors and seasoned leaders to learn from.  I also noticed a lot of the productivity and business problems are people problems, caused by poor communication, bad behavior, poor management and lots of other completely avoidable causes.  With more than 25 years of senior leadership experience in diverse areas of human resources across both large publicly traded and private organizations, I knew I could help. So, I channeled my skills into a robust suite of offerings aimed at enhancing workplace teams from both the corporate and individual perspectives. This vision sparked the creation of Workplace Synergistics, where we assess the current state of organizations and pinpoint areas where people-related issues are hindering performance and results.

Q. Tell us more about Workplace Synergistics 

A. Workplace Synergistics is a consulting firm that specializes in improving workplace dynamics and overall performance. We try to take a people-focused approach to improving the performance of a company and the well-being of the individuals who work there.  Our ideal client has a performance and/or people problem that they cannot solve, or they need an extension of their bench to tackle lofty initiatives. We help clients get to the root of their problem in order to identify the right solution and approach all of our clients with candid assessments, transparency in pricing and fees, work product excellence, and sound advice. We offer a range of services including human capital consulting, management, and leadership development programs, the Predictive Index talent assessments and platform, facilitation, and coaching. Our approach is unique in that we focus on the vital element of people within an organization and how they interact with one another to drive success. With our expertise and proven track record, we have helped numerous companies achieve higher levels of productivity, satisfaction, and success. 

Our services can be grouped into three main categories:

  1. Talent Development: This encompasses a series of programs aimed at enhancing the skills of existing and emerging leaders. Methods employed include one-on-one coaching, multi-day training programs, and workshops that inspire personal growth and drive business success.
  2. Talent Assessment: Workplace Synergistics provides the latest in psychological assessments designed to help with getting the right people on the bus and into the right seats.  We also help with developing individual self-awareness, manager-employee effectiveness and designing effective teams.
  3. Talent Management: In this segment, Workplace Synergistics provides compensation benchmarking, leveling, drafting performance standards, executive team strategic planning, organizational design, HR audits, HR metrics, and HR strategy development. 

These services are thoughtfully designed to address the unique needs and challenges of each organization, thereby promoting a more engaged, effective, and successful workforce. 

Q. What are the key elements that contribute to the success of your business?

A. The incredible growth we've experienced at Workplace Synergistics has largely been driven by word-of-mouth referrals. We are proud of the work we provide for many renowned corporations such as Superior Construction, Stellar, JWB Real Estate, One Call Care Management, Insurance Offices of America and Ventra Health.  Most of our engagements are repeat business and growth is organically generated through referrals, attracting new clients. There is nothing more humbling than a client referring you to someone else.   We work hard to honor that referral every time.

Q. Can you tell us about any challenges you faced while building Workplace Synergistics and how did you overcome them?

A. The biggest challenge was getting started. Going from a steady income to relying heavily on faith to survive those first few years. We had to develop our programs and services, create partnerships, and establish ourselves as experts in the field. And like any young business, it takes time to get things off the ground. However, we stayed true to our values and mission, consistently delivering exceptional results for our clients which ultimately led to our long-term success.

Q. What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs or those looking to improve their leadership skills?

Additionally, constantly seek out opportunities to learn and improve your own leadership skills through workshops, courses, or mentorship programs. Surround yourself with other successful entrepreneurs and leaders for support and inspiration. 

And most importantly, never stop striving for personal and professional growth. As the saying goes, "leaders are made, not born." With dedication and hard work, anyone can become a successful leader. Q. As we wrap up, what are your future plans for Workplace Synergistics? 

A. Looking ahead, I envision Workplace Synergistics expanding our reach to organizations beyond the southeast, empowering them through tailored strategies and programs.
